Keep Moving Forward

I am sure that we have all have days in our lives when we feel somewhat defeated, exhausted, overwhelmed, afraid, angry, upset, unhappy and are probably feeling a myriad of other different, negative emotions. Maybe it's a day that we just sit and ask ourselves the question,

What exactly am I doing and why am I doing it again?

You start to question yourself, your decisions, your actions. Sometimes we have to realize that we are our own worst critics. We beat ourselves up for the things we aren't as well as the things we are. It's never good enough. There's always something that isn't "quite right". If only I was 10 lbs lighter or heavier, had more muscle tone, was prettier, had a better car, house or job. There are a million things that we probably say to ourselves each day.

If you're like me, your thoughts sometimes run through your mind unrelentingly like one Ascela train after the other continuing to feed to your negative thought patterns.

However, I have realized that if I am in this type of thought pattern things just seem to continue to feed the negative emotions unless I somehow consciously break free from them.

Some days I have to remove myself from a negative situation or thinking by just doing things that make me feel good. With me I find a comfortable spot and write or I go and work out. Whether it's a workout class, a short walk through the neighborhood or a run on the treadmill while listening to some music can be helpful.

Music always seems to help me decompress. Do you ever notice how music can just change your mood? Sometimes you have to be careful with the music you listen to also. Sometimes the music can put you into a place you may not want to be. Instead of making you happier or more relaxed, it can make you depressed or anxious. I've learned to say to myself, "Nope, we are not going there today" as I change the station or skip to the next track. I think we need to start taking more active roles in our thoughts and where our minds take us. If only it were as easy as flipping on the switch to positive thinking. Wouldn't that be great? Because its not as easy as that we must find our own ways to move through these negative days and thoughts. Isn't it interesting that the more we think negative thoughts the more negativity seems to find us? It's like one big spiral downward.

Just like anything else in life, our days are ever changing. Some days we are feeling on top of the world and others we feel like we are crawling through quicksand to just take a step. Just remember this, there will be days that you have to fight through just to get to some of the best days of your life.

Don't let thoughts of circumstances, toxic people, places or views (whether they are other's or your own) live inside your mind and take up space!

I was recently watching something on TV that talked about how most sharks must keep moving or they die! They need to keep moving forward constantly in order to keep oxygen-rich water flowing over their gills. They must keep moving to stay alive! I found this really interesting. I also found it significant to our own lives. We have to keep moving forward even if its one small step at a time. Some days we may fall but it's important to remember what is inside us, the fight and courage to get back up and find that way forward.
